Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What training and experience do you have as a Foot Care Nurse?
I am a Registered Nurse (RN) with specialized training in assessing, treating, and preventing foot health issues. I completed my Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing through Laurentian University then went on to do an Advanced Diabetic Foot Care Certification at Algonquin College. For the past 10 years, I have provided medical-grade foot care, focusing on nail trimming, callus and corn reduction, and foot health assessments, especially for those with diabetes, circulation issues, or mobility challenges.
2. How is a Foot Care Nurse different from a pedicurist?
Unlike a pedicurist, a foot care nurse:
✔ Must use autoclave-sterilized tools to prevent infections
✔ Is trained to care for diabetic and high-risk feet
✔ Recognize and treat complex issues such as corns, thickened nails, ingrown toenails, offloading pressure points
✔ Can monitor foot health conditions and provide education to prevent wounds and other foot related complications
✔ Follows strict medical hygiene and safety standards
3. What happens during a foot care appointment?
A typical appointment includes:
✔ A foot health assessment (skin, nails, circulation)
✔ Trimming and thinning of toenails to prevent ingrown nails and discomfort
✔ Callus and corn reduction for pain relief
✔ Thorough assessment of feet to identify pressure points, discuss offloading techniques and wound prevention
✔ Moisturizing and education to maintain foot health
4. How do you treat ingrown toenails?
I treat ingrown toenails by carefully trimming out the offending edge to relieve pressure and prevent further irritation. I will also provide education on ingrown nail prevention and at home maintenance. If needed, I can also apply an Onyfix brace, a painless, non-invasive solution that helps guide the nail into a natural, healthy growth pattern over time. This method is ideal for clients who want to avoid more invasive procedures.
5. How often should I book a foot care appointment?
Most clients benefit from a visit every 6–8 weeks, but it depends on your needs. I will offer a suggested follow up for you at the end of our visit.
6. Do you treat fungal nails or infections?
Yes, I provide care for fungal nails, thickened nails, and other foot conditions. While I don’t prescribe medication, I can recommend treatments but you may need to follow up with you physician for diagnosis and prescription.
7. Is your equipment sterilized?
Absolutely! I use autoclave-sterilized instruments, ensuring they are 100% disinfected and safe for every client. I adhere to the highest level of sterilization, the same as a dental office or hospital operating room. I follow Public Health Ontario’s IPAC Checklist for Reprocessing Medical Equipment for Clinical Office Practice. I stay up to date with the most current guidelines and recommendations from Ontario Public Health and maintain detailed records of all my sterilized tools.
8. Do you offer mobile services?
Yes! I provide in-home foot care visits for those who have difficulty travelling. This is a great option for seniors, people with mobility challenges, or those recovering from surgery.
9. How much does it cost? And do you accept insurance?
In-home visits cost $80 and if you come to the clinic it is $50 a visit. Many extended health benefits and insurance plans cover foot care by an RN. I can provide a receipt for reimbursement, but I recommend checking with your provider.
